BANKSETA participates in SETA Skills Summit 2024

BANKSETA is proud to participate in the SETA Skills Summit 2024, held from 23 to 24 April 2024 at the Birchwood Hotel and OR Tambo Conference Centre. This pivotal event focused on enhancing skills development across South Africa, providing an invaluable platform for dialogue on partnerships between the private and public sectors, emphasising the collaborative efforts required to drive workforce development.

Opening Remarks by Minister Nzimande

The proceedings were officially opened by the Honourable Minister Professor Blade Nzimande, who underscored the importance of this summit in addressing the critical skills gaps within our economy. Minister Nzimande highlighted the role of Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) as “matchmakers,” facilitating connections among TVET colleges, learners, training providers, and employers.

This matchmaking function is crucial for aligning training programmes with industry needs, ensuring that graduates possess the skills necessary to succeed in the workforce. By fostering these connections, SETAs play a vital role in enhancing the employability of young South Africans.

Focus on Youth Development

A key focus of this year’s summit is the empowerment of youth aged 18 to 35. This demographic represents a significant portion of our population, and addressing their skills needs is essential for economic growth. The high demand for skilled workers in this age group underscores the urgency of developing tailored training programmes that meet industry requirements.

By prioritising youth development, BANKSETA and other stakeholders aim to create sustainable pathways for young individuals to enter the workforce. This initiative not only benefits the participants but also strengthens the economy by providing businesses with a skilled workforce ready to tackle the challenges of the modern job market.

Public-Private Partnerships for Effective Skills Development

The effectiveness of public-private partnerships (PPPs) is vital for maximising the impact of skills development initiatives. For these collaborations to function effectively, there must be a concerted effort to review legislation and accommodate innovation. By doing so, teaching and learning institutions can adapt swiftly to changing industry needs, allowing for efficiencies and effectiveness to be realised. This approach ensures that training programmes remain relevant and impactful, fostering a skilled workforce that can meet the demands of a dynamic economy.

Collaborating for a Brighter Future

Collaboration between the private and public sectors is vital for maximising the impact of skills development initiatives. By working together, organisations can share resources, expertise, and best practices, resulting in more effective training programmes and better outcomes for learners.

The discussions at the SETA Skills Summit are paving the way for innovative partnerships that will enhance skills development and employment opportunities across the country.

Launch of SETA Integrated High Impact Programmes (SIHIP)

The SETA Skills Summit also served as a platform to launch the SETA Integrated High Impact Programmes (SIHIP). This initiative aims to streamline skills development across sectors by integrating efforts to address critical skills shortages. SIHIP focuses on high-impact areas such as engineering, ICT, and health, ensuring that training efforts are aligned with national priorities and workforce demands.

The SETA Integrated High Impact Programmes launched were as follows:

  • Public Sector Institutional Delivery Capacitation
  • Significant Reduction Unemployment of young people including graduates
  • Sustainable Entrepreneurial, SMME, and Cooperatives development
  • Holistic digitisation and advancement of technological infrastructure, research and development
  • Effective and Efficient Shared Services on Information and Communication Technology for SETA-wide Learner Management System
  • Rural Development for Community Impact

The SETA Skills Summit 2024, with the tagline “Together, Skilling the Nation,” served as an important platform for addressing the skills challenges facing South Africa. BANKSETA is committed to playing an active role in these discussions, advocating for policies and practices that support youth empowerment and workforce readiness.
