Description of Funding Window

The BANKSETA invites all qualifying candidates to apply for the Doctoral Qualification Funding 2025/2026 academic year.

The PhD funding window opens on Thursday, 11 September 2025 and closes on Friday, 24 October 2025 at 16:00.

The closing date and time for all applications is Friday, 24 October 2025 at 16:00. No late applications will be considered.

These documents must be read in conjunction with the BANKSETA Funding Window Guidelines Document which specifies the BANKSETA requirements for all applicants of funding windows. The purpose of this document is to indicate what the specific criteria is for the different funding windows..

Who can apply?	Eligibility Criteria	Allocation Criteria
Employed or unemployed applicants who are South African citizens and whose studies/research topic is aligned to the Banking or Alternative Banking Sector.	Copy of South African ID Proof of registration for 2025 or 2026 academic year Approved Research Proposal Approval letter / Proof of approval of the research proposal Fully completed application form Signed proof of employment on employer letterhead with a clear commencement date If unemployed, affidavit confirming unemployment Declaration of funding from other sources	The total funding per learner per year will be capped at R70,000.00 for a period not exceeding three (3) years.

Submission Information

Any application without the necessary supporting documents will be deemed incomplete and will not be considered.

Important Notes:

The higher education institution will be given preference to enter into a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with BANKSETA. Where applicable, a BANKSETA-registered employer may enter into an MoA with BANKSETA and the funded student.
In all cases, the applicant must adhere to the requirements indicated in the guidelines.
