The BANKSETA is committed to empowering the country’s youth, through various youth development initiatives which include learnerships, internships and career guidance workshops.
A vital part of our mission is to inform, engage and empower the youth by providing information on skills development initiatives in the banking and microfinance sector. BANKSETA offers learnerships and other youth programmes to unemployed youth with the aim of promoting employability in line with government policy as per National Skills Development Strategy (NSDS III) objectives. These programmes are aligned with the banking and alternative banking sector qualification/employment requirements.
Employers from the banking and alternative banking industry who would like to become involved in coaching, mentoring and supporting up-and-coming talent in banking and microfinance, can become involved in this funding opportunity.
BANKSETA approves TVET colleges on an annual basis for Work Integrated Learning (WIL) grant funding, the aim of which is to assist the colleges to make links with employers in order for the learners to obtain the requisite workplace experience.
BANKSETA covers the funding of bursaries through partnership agreements with Universities. The support is holistic (covering tuition, textbooks and accommodation, on or off-campus, depending on what has been arranged by the University).
One of the BANKSETA’s corporate strategies is that of Youth Development. The BANKSETA offers various vocational education and training programmes to bridge the gap between structured learning and work experience in the banking and inclusive banking industry. The BANKSETA has partnered with various institutions of higher learning and the banking sector to facilitate theory and workplace practice into qualifications that are registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).
Learnerships have been identified as one of the best vehicles to build skills for both the employed and unemployed based on a unique feature that a learnership is an occupationally-based learning programme that combines structured theory and practical experience and leads to a registered qualification by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). Learnerships place emphasis on practical work exposure and are linked to specific occupations to ensure relevance and sustainability.
The BANKSETA provides funding for post-graduate learners through a youth development intervention aimed at recruiting unemployed graduates in order for them to further their studies and to expose them to the world of work.
