New Possibilities, Post Historical Debt

Meet Thandeka Cacambile, a young lady from Eastern Cape, who was raised by her grandmother. Thandeka grew up in a household supported by the SASSA grant scheme. Despite her financial hardships, she remained determined to pursue higher education and later moved to Cape Town to build a better future.
Thandeka completed both her Diploma and her Degree, but historical student debt prevented her from accessing her certificates. Without proof of her qualifications, she could neither compete fully for employment nor progress with her studies.

The burden created a difficult cycle. Thandeka’s family was unable to settle the debt due to financial burdens, and the certificates she needed to improve her prospects remained withheld.

“I felt like all my hard work was wasted. I could not apply for jobs or further my studies. I felt hopeless,” Thandeka said.

BANKSETA Opens the Door Forward

Through the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), Thandeka learnt about BANKSETA’s Historic Debt Clearance Programme. After applying and explaining how historical debt had blocked her academic progress, fortunately she was selected for support in 2026 to settle the debt for her diploma and degree.
This intervention removed a barrier that had held her back for years and almost lost hope. Although the administrative process required patience, paperwork, and regular communication, Thandeka remained focused and dedicated to ensuring that her submission has all the necessary documents.

“For the first time in years, I felt like I could breathe. I felt seen and supported. It gave me hope again.” She explained.

Opportunity Restored, Debt Settled

With her qualifications now accessible, Thandeka could submit complete applications for jobs in the ICT field, and she is currently pursuing post-graduate studies in Information Technology. The programme has strengthened her confidence, restored her dignity and given her a renewed sense of possibility.

Looking Ahead

Thandeka’s immediate goal is to secure employment in the ICT sector. She also intends to complete her postgraduate studies, and her long-term goal is to mentor young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Her journey demonstrates how targeted financial support can unlock qualifications, restore confidence, and connect young people to further learning and employment pathways.

“BANKSETA did not just pay my debt. It restored my hope, my dignity, and my future. Because of this support, I stand tall and pursue my dreams. Enkosi. Thank you.”
