From Financial Challenges to Future Possibilities

For a 23-year-old Vuledzani Mutshinyalo from Pretoria (Gauteng), education has always represented more than academic achievement. It has been a pathway to opportunity, independence, and the possibility of building a better future. As a student at the University of Pretoria, Vuledzani pursued Actuarial Science with determination, even when financial challenges at home made the journey difficult.
Before being selected for the BANKSETA-funded Actuarial programme in 2025, Vuledzani’s family faced the challenges of supporting both his studies and his brother’s education at the same time.

Through the university’s financial aid system on the student portal, Vuledzani was successfully selected to participate in the programme. This marked his turning point, with BANKSETA’s support. He was able to reduce the financial burden on his family and focus fully on his academic development which has always been his goal.
“Since joining the programme, life has improved,” he reflects. “Not having to worry about tuition fees, living costs and being able to place my academics as the main priority, has made manageable.”

Support that Builds Confidence

The programme provided more than financial assistance. It created an environment of encouragement, shared experience and personal growth. Vuledzani valued the sense of community amongst students who were navigating similar academic journeys and supporting one another along the way.
He also appreciated the academic, mentorship and personal support, which was offered through the programme, as it helped strengthen his confidence when applying for opportunities and engaging with professionals. Over time, the experience improved his confidence and willingness to take on challenges, putting herself out there.

Opening Doors to Future Opportunities

Today, Vuledzani is pursuing his Honours in Mathematical Statistics, having completed his undergraduate degree in Actuarial Science. He continues to work towards his actuarial professional qualifications, and he is proud of the progress thus far.
The support has also helped expose him to new opportunities, including tutoring and mentoring other students, as well as the opportunity to work as a Junior Financial Engineer. These experiences have strengthened his belief in continuous learning and the importance of taking responsibility for making the most out of every opportunity.

Lessons for the Next Generation

For Vuledzani, one of the biggest lessons taken from the journey, is that learning is continuous and believes opportunities must be valued and used responsibly. He wishes to encourage other young people to remain consistent even when the path is difficult.
“You do not have to be the most talented person in the room. Sometimes the difference is simply continuing to show up and putting in the work,” he says.
His long-term goal is to become a Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa. With determination, continued studies and the confidence gained through the programme, he is steadily working towards that ambition.

A Message of Gratitude

Vuledzani expresses sincere appreciation to BANKSETA for investing in young people and creating opportunities that make a real difference. For him, the programme has provided more than funding; it has offered confidence, hope and a stronger foundation for the future.
“I am forever grateful to BANKSETA to have invested in my development. I look forward to contributing back to society in the same way that BANKSETA has contributed to my journey.”
